Cape TownPeople & Light

Cape Town is city of many faces. It’s striking coastline, ethereal light, and mist cloaked peaks awe visitors and locals alike. Barely 20 years out of Apartheid, the city is a dizzying mix of idealism and outrage as the ‘born-free’ generation redefines what it is to be South African. While the infrastructure and economic disparities divide, the easy, honest daily interactions between people unite. The cab driver remembering his family farm in the Namaqualand. The old woman feeding the pigeons in the Company Gardens who will tell you about her childhood in District 6, before her home was demolished by government bulldozers. The barista sharing her vision of building community gardens. As a foreigner, it was both uncomfortable and inspiring. The city stands as both a dream, a nightmare, and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
